Course Description

This course is an enhancement to the classroom applications and a study of the relationship of teachers and schools to the methods of teaching. 
In consonance with the Conceptual Framework, this course is designed to develop the knowledge, skills, and dispositions to effectively teach.
The course provides teacher candidates with opportunities to develop competence in viewing other educational systems.

Technology Considerations

Teacher candidates are expected to access information from a variety of websites and to use technological resources in the development of learning tasks.

Upon completion of this course, students will

Course Assignment

Each person will acquire and compile a visual electronic record of their travel experience.

Minimum Criteria

A

Criteria included in earning a B, plus twelve (12) additional digitized photographic images (total of 24) with accurate text descriptions.  Also, five double space pages on the topic will be required.

B

Criteria included in earning a C, plus acquire a minimum of twelve (12) digitized photographic images that illustrate the travel experience and use a graphics software program such as PhotoShop to enhance the images on the computer.  Create an electronic deliverable, such as MS PowerPoint or Photoshop Album, which presents the images in a comprehensive method (graphic and textual) for others to understand and realize the experience as a ‘meaningful educational program abroad’, i.e. pedagogically sound, using appropriate instructional design strategies. Also, four double space pages on the topic will be required.

C

Participating in all required components of the travel program, including organizational meetings prior to travel, on time for meetings and instructions or trip planning and daily travel, as well as full participation, engagement during the events.  Embraces assignments provided with enthusiasm and excitement.  

Each pair of students will be provided a research topic to prepare PRIOR to the trip.  Examples include transportation, school systems, health systems, history of education, type of schools, current issues in education. Each student will prepare at least three double space (one inch margins, 12 point font) pages on the topic and be prepared to present their findings in informal gatherings during the trip.  Finally, the research will be compiled into an electronic summary of the course using PowerPoint or another prior-approved program (ex., Photoshop Album, HTML, Frontpage, etc.).

If you are unable to provide this paper BEFORE the trip, the penalty will consist of doubling the page requirement and attaching at least three pertinent media artifacts collected while abroad (i.e. newspaper, brochure, pamphlet, etc.)

D

Does not participate in the events, leaves the group during travel, complains or presents a disagreeable attitude towards others and does not possess the ‘team attitude’ required for a group, collaborative travel/study experience.

F

Ignores schedule and program events and displays unprofessional attitude to colleagues and instructors.

Basic Classroom Rules

The rules that you learned in kindergarten apply in this course.  "Do unto others..., If you don't have anything nice to say..., share everything, play fair, don't hit people, etc." 
More importantly, for a study abroad course, we will be sharing a significant amount of time with others, therefore, we all should be overly considerate, on time, courteous, etc.
and mature/professional as we may encounter unexpected challenges that are typically associated with travel.  I would encourage you to view these challenges as exciting
opportunities to work on your management skills and enjoy!
