MicroTeaches and In/Out-Class Activities (70 points) 1. Active Engagement (20 points) - Active/productive participation in class during activities, laboratories and exercises will be expected from all professional teacher candidates. Following many activities/demonstrations/laboratories, each table of students will discuss how they would teach the activity in their classroom using one of the science methods. One candidate from each table will be asked to present a short (2-3 minute) conceptual science MicroTeach (mT) to reinforce a particular science method. The intent is to supplement direct instruction with active, student centered teaching. Therefore, if you are attentive during the presentation of the science method, the natural propensity to practice this method will occur. This will be a low-keyed, brief presentation amongst colleagues. 2. In-Class Chapter Quizzes (10 points) - A brief short response quiz opportunity will be offered on a random basis. The quizzes will be taken on your Post-It notes, so please be prepared with material and having read the required material prior to class. 3. Authentic MicroTeaches (40 points)
- A major portion and rationale for teaching this course in the schools is for
students to participate in context teaching, authentic methods to actual
students. Therefore, many days, you will be teaching a science concept with
a colleague to a class of elementary students. If your teacher/classroom is busy or not in the room when you arrive, feel free to print and bring the list of teachers who you can then move to at http:///www.jhargis.com/mTeacherlist.htm BTW, my initial hope was variance all around, however, I felt it best to minimize variables, so folks will have one partner/day (i.e. same partner for both microTeaches) and one concept/day - a concept of your choosing for that level. This should greatly simplify the logistics and hopefully increase the engagement and outcomes. |
