Course Description:
This course examines instructional methods,
materials, and curricula for teaching the sciences within a science, technology,
and society context. The course is designed to immerse the teacher in
process-oriented learning and scientific inquiry in multiple settings. It
assumes that the learning of science is facilitated by a knowledgeable,
enthusiastic teacher who is aware of individual learners in multicultural and
multilingual contexts and uses integrative methodologies to meet their needs.
The course is in line with the College Mission in its emphasis on integration of
sciences, alignment with state and national frameworks, learning about learning
and educational technology.
Course Conceptual Frameworks:
A conceptual framework establishes the shared vision for efforts in
preparing educators to work effectively in P-12 schools. It provides
direction and accountability. It is knowledge-based, articulated, shared,
coherent, consistent with the mission and continuously evaluated.
A. Teachers are committed to students and their learning.
B. Science is important for all students.
C. Teachers know the subjects they teach and how to lead students in learning
those subjects.
D. There are many ways to teach well, but learning science has to be an active
process: children learn science by doing science.
E. There are principals based on theory, research and experience to guide
teaching.
F. Teachers are responsible for managing student learning.
G. Teachers think systematically about their practice and learn from experience.
H. Teachers are members of learning communities.
