Professional Experience

Assistant Provost for Faculty Development; Director, Center for Teaching and Learning; and Associate Professor. June 2007 - Present:  University of the Pacific, Stockton, CA
As Assistant Provost, the
primary purpose is to promote high quality teaching, productivity in research and creative endeavors, and faculty satisfaction through the delivery of faculty development programs.  The responsibilities include, but are not limited to overseeing the development and implementation of faculty development programs, including new faculty orientation program and luncheons; the Center for Teaching Excellence; working with the Committee on Academic Planning and Development; oversight of teaching incentive awards and other grants; and work with various other stakeholders.  As Director, the primary purpose is to support faculty in the development of effective teaching and assessment of skills and strategies, which includes helping faculty explore and develop innovative teaching strategies that are responsive to a diverse range of student learning styles, including the effective use of technology, interdisciplinary approaches, and application of learning theory; developing and coordinating a range of teaching support services, including individual consultations, assistance with course design, seminars, and workshops focused on best practices in teaching; promoting the scholarship of teaching, including activities such as student/faculty research, innovative teaching strategies, and disciplinary pedagogical scholarship.
As Associate Professor, University of the Pacific, taught Pacific Seminar II, which is composed of different topical seminars that examine in-depth one or more issues of a good society. These discussion-oriented, writing intensive courses are specifically designed for the first-year experience.  The content and types of assignments vary among the seminars, but all develop skills, such as critical thinking, writing, scholarly research, and speaking.  The course I taught was called "Money, Power and Green Profit", which focused on the importance of human’s interaction with their natural world.  This learner-centered experience utilized active learning methodology to assist participants in making connections between societal attributes, informal education and the natural world.  The approach was conceptually-based and subsequently process driven, engaging learners to observe, communicate, classify, infer and predict.  A contextual learning environment facilitated learners to build on their prior knowledge enabling connections for authentic learning, critical thinking and engagement.

Director, Office of Faculty Enhancement and Assistant Professor. August 2002 - June 2007:  University of North Florida, Jacksonville, FL.
Supported faculty in teaching, research, and service and promote sound pedagogy through workshops, organization of informal discussion groups and support of technological applications.  Services include
workshops and resources designed to address faculty needs related to teaching, learning, and research; identification of specific learning settings, activities and objectives; confidential classroom visitation, assessment and consultation; open resource library housing literature supporting faculty development in the roles of teacher, learner and scholar; publication of a newsletter to disseminate information about faculty development activities and resources; assistance, advice and exemplary examples for reappointment, tenure and promotion; assistance in improving or designing quality instructional materials; facilitation of research projects, publications, and professional development or conference presentations of faculty; and models of curriculum design and syllabus modification.
As Assistant Professor,
